Methods on How to Pay Your Property Tax Bill

The second installment 2023 tax bill will be due for all Cook County property owners and taxpayers on Thursday, August 1, 2024.  Periodically, we like to inform taxpayers of the myriad of options they have to pay their property taxes.

Many property owners escrow their real estate taxes and authorize mortgage companies to pay their two annual real estate tax payments.  These taxpayers pay their mortgage company a monthly amount to cover the cost of real estate taxes as well as principal and interest on their loans.

Many others pay their tax bills themselves by paying online by using the Cook County Treasurer’s website – www.cookcountytreasurer.com and do not have to pay a service fee.  You can also pay tax installment bill at Chase Bank at the nearly 400 Chase Bank locations in Illinois.  You must present your tax bill payment coupon with your tax bill.  These coupons may be detached from the bottom of tax bills that were mailed in early July to owners.  When paying at Chase Bank, your check should include your Property Index Number (PIN), taxpayer name, property location, including unit number, mailing address, telephone number, email address and tax year/installment (first or second).

Another option is to pay your second installment 2023 tax bill is at the more than 100 community bank locations.  A list of these community bank locations can be found at the Treasurer’s website.  Taxpayers should bring the original tax bill with you and a cashier will give you a receipt for your payment.

You can also pay by mail with a check.  Your check should include your Property Index Number and other information which we have listed above.  Your cancelled check is your receipt.  You can mail checks for current tax bills to the Cook County Treasurer’s Office, P.O. Box 805438, Chicago, IL 60680.

You can also pay your tax bills in person at the Cook County Treasurer’s Office at 118 N. Clark Street, Room 112 in the County Building.

Lastly, you may pay via credit card online at www.cookcountytreasurer.com.  Please note that there is 2.1% convenience fee associated with credit card payments that are paid through the payment processor.

Illinois law requires that those who fail to pay in full by the due date will be charged 0.75% per month in interest or 9% per year.  The Cook County Treasurer’s Office allows taxpayers to make partial payments over time as their budgets allow, but taxpayers are responsible for paying the total amount due, along with interest associated with late tax payments.  A payment plan calculator will be on the Treasurer’s website on August 2nd ,at no cost, to help taxpayers who are paying their real estate taxes late.
